DIGITAL RIGHTS ARE HUMAN RIGHTS

Law centers around human rights, and law is promoted for human rights. As per the Article 8 of the Declaration of Human Rights, any human being has the right for privacy: this is reflected in the 4th Amendment of the United States’ constitution. While these documents are in spirit all-encompassing, in practice they are used to the scope to which they are written in: for example, law enforcers can’t break into someone’s house without a warrant or sufficient motive, but this doesn’t mean that they can’t break into their communications network, or computer, as it is not stated directly in the law. Many cases have gone to court to say how unacceptable this is, and how we should practice the law for what it represents, not what it textually is. With the latest government’s moving towards mass surveillance and censorship, citizens need to remind their authorities what they think, what is important to them and how it influences their life. Whatever rights you carry as a physical human, you also carry when you engage with other people or services online: digital rights are human rights. Join us by adding your support to this form!
